Here’s what one of our recent winners had to say..

Caroline Jarvis from Nottingham Trent University, recipient of the Yakult Award for Best Final Year Project in Microbial Physiology and Genomics in 2021

“I have thoroughly enjoyed studying BSc Biomedical Science at Nottingham Trent University. A highlight of my time at university has been my research project on inducing plasmid loss with toxin-antitoxin constructs within enteroinvasive Escherichia coli O96:H19, for which I was awarded this prize by Yakult. This project aimed to investigate whether the native pathogenicity of bacterial isolates could be disrupted by the addition of specific genetic material, namely the vapBC toxin-antitoxin system. The success of my degree and research project have further increased my aspiration to become a research scientist in the area of molecular microbiology. To further pursue this, I have secured a place at the University of Sheffield to study MSc Antimicrobial Resistance, and I hope to go on to complete a PhD. I am truly grateful to Yakult for this award, which will set me apart from other applicants and provide me with a distinguishing achievement throughout my career.”
